Volunteer Opportunities

The St. Vincent DePaul Mission of Waterbury, Inc. is dedicated to helping people in need.

If you would like to be part of our Mission of Service, we encourage
you to volunteer your time and talents. Some of the opportunities we have available are listed below: 

ANCHOR. Name: soupkitchen
  • Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry

     

    Adult Volunteers can:
     

    • Assist staff with making coffee and light continental breakfast 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
    • Assist staff with lunch meal preparation.
    • Assist serving lunch from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM.
    • Assist staff in cleaning up after meal is cooked and served.
    • Help our Driver with food pick-ups and deliveries.
    • Stocking/rotating the pantry non-perishable food items.
       

    Children over 14 years of age may volunteer but only if they are supervised and accompanied at all times by an adult parent, legal guardian or chaperone.
     

    Volunteers are needed from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM Monday through Sunday.
     

    Note: Please be advised large groups may need to be divided for safety in the kitchen. Large groups are encouraged to schedule more than one date to accommodate the whole group.
     

    As the kitchen is often required to serve, clean and move goods, volunteers must be able to do repetitive bending, lifting and pushing. If you are unable to lift heavy objects (i.e., over 40 pounds), please inform the Soup Kitchen Manager.

ANCHOR. Name: homeless
  • Homeless Shelter

    From 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, Adult Male Volunteers can:
     

    • Assist our male guests as they get ready for their nightly shower by handing them prepared bags with clean socks, towels and pajamas.
    • Assist staff in the kitchen to serve the evening meal.
       

    Adult Female Volunteers can:
     

    • Assist in serving dinner to the single females at the shelter from 4:45 PM to 6:00 PM.
    • Assist staff at 5:45 PM to organize the kitchen and prepare food for our males guests.

     

    Adults Males and Females can:
     

    • Assist staff to clean the shelter, make beds and help with the laundry from 8:00 AM to 12:00 Noon.
       

    Children over 14 years of age may volunteer, but only if they are supervised and accompanied at all times by an adult parent, legal guardian or chaperone.
     

    As volunteers are often physically active in their assistance, they should be able to do repetitive bending, pushing and lifting. If you are unable to lift heavy objects (i.e., over 40 pounds), please inform the Program Director.

ANCHOR. Name: store
  • Thrift Store

     

    Adult volunteers can:

    • Help customers while they shop for clothing and housewares.
    • Prepare clothing to be placed on racks—sorting, tagging, and hanging.
    • Organize and showcase donated goods.
    • Monitor the store.
    • Prepare goods and furniture for sale and delivery.
    • Enter and track inventory.
    • Clean the store and inventory to maintain a professional atmosphere.
    • Assist with scheduling pickups and deliveries, client applications, special events, and store promotions.
    • Serve as a cashier (for those with cashiering/cash register experience-subject to approval and background check).

    As the store is often required to sort or move goods, volunteers should be able to do repetitive bending, lifting and pushing. If you are unable to lift heavy objects (i.e., over 40 pounds), please inform the Thrift Store Manager and she may determine other activities that are suitable for you.

     

    Children over 14 years of age may volunteer but only if they are supervised and accompanied at all times by an adult parent, legal guardian or chaperone.

     

    Volunteers can assist staff Monday through Saturday.
